What weight should I choose for a natural duvet?

The "grammage" (filling weight) of a duvet corresponds to the weight of its filling, expressed in g/m². While it serves as a preliminary guide for choosing a natural duvet, it is not enough on its own to determine its level of warmth. The composition of the filling, and in particular the proportion of down, also plays an essential role, just like the bedroom temperature and individual preferences.

At Maison Trinitas, our three natural duvets thus feature filling weights ranging from 180 to 250 g/m², with fillings composed of 70 to 100% new Masurian goose down. A duvet with a lower filling weight can therefore offer excellent insulation while maintaining the lightness and loft sought in a natural down duvet.

Which filling weight should you choose for a natural duvet?

To choose the filling weight of a natural duvet, you must take into account the bedroom temperature, your sensitivity to cold, and above all, the composition of its filling. The higher the proportion of down, the better the duvet can provide thermal insulation with a reduced filling weight.

The filling weight is therefore a benchmark, but it must always be considered in relation to the proportion of down and feathers.

Need Bedroom temperature Indicative filling weight* To take into account
Lightweight duvet Above 22 °C Approximately 150 to 200 g/m² Ideal for warm bedrooms and people sensitive to heat
Temperate duvet Approximately 18 to 22 °C Approximately 200 to 300 g/m² The proportion of down can help maintain warmth and lightness with a reduced filling weight
Warm duvet Below 18 °C From approximately 300 g/m² To be adjusted based on filling composition and sensitivity to cold
Very warm duvet Very poorly heated bedroom / sleeper who is very sensitive to cold No universal filling weight Prioritize the warmth level announced by the manufacturer rather than just the filling weight

These values are provided for information purposes only. There is no universal correlation between the filling weight of a natural duvet and its level of warmth.

Two duvets with the same filling weight can indeed provide very different sensations. Down is particularly light and has a high insulating power: the higher its proportion in the filling, the less relevant it is to judge a duvet solely on its number of grams per square meter.

This is why Maison Trinitas natural duvets have relatively light filling weights, from 180 to 250 g/m², while being designed to offer the thermal comfort sought in a temperate bedroom. To understand this difference, you must look at what is hidden behind these few grams: the proportion of down, its loft power, as well as the complete composition of the filling.

Why is the filling weight not enough to choose a down duvet?

Filling weight is often the first criterion looked at when comparing two duvets. It gives a useful indication of the quantity of filling used, but does not, by itself, provide information on its insulating qualities. This distinction is particularly important for a natural duvet: 200 g/m² of down and 200 g/m² of feathers do not offer the same properties or sensations.

What is the filling weight of a duvet?

The filling weight indicates the weight of the filling (e.g., down, feathers, synthetic...) contained in one square meter of the duvet. It is expressed in grams per square meter (g/m²).

It should therefore not be confused with the total weight of the duvet, which also depends on its dimensions. At an identical filling weight, a 240 × 260 cm duvet naturally contains more filling and weighs more than a 140 × 200 cm duvet.

The expression "filling density" is sometimes used to refer to the filling weight of a duvet. However, the two notions are not strictly the same: filling weight measures a mass per unit of surface area, while density strictly designates a mass related to a volume. When choosing a duvet, the filling weight in g/m² is the reference indication.

But knowing the quantity of filling does not yet tell you how it behaves. For that, you have to look at its composition.

Why can a duvet rich in down be light and warm?

Down is made up of small, soft, and light structures capable of trapping a large amount of air. It is this air immobilized within the filling that forms an insulating barrier and helps retain the sleeper's heat.

Down thus possesses significant loft power for a reduced weight. The richer a filling is in quality down, the more it can develop volume and trap air without needing to add a lot of material. Feathers, being heavier and more structured, provide more body to the filling.

This explains why a natural duvet of 180 g/m² can offer very good thermal performance when it is composed of down with high loft power. A low filling weight does not necessarily mean a duvet is not warm: it can also reflect the capacity of the filling to insulate effectively with little material.

At Maison Trinitas, this difference is directly observable between our three natural duvets. From 180 to 250 g/m², their filling weight evolves along with their proportion of down and feathers. To choose between the Absolue, the Prestige, and the Hôtel Premium, one must therefore look at these characteristics together rather than comparing only their filling weight.

180, 200, or 250 g/m²: Comparing Maison Trinitas natural duvets

Maison Trinitas natural duvets are all filled with new Masurian goose down and feathers, but in different proportions. Their filling weight thus varies from 180 to 250 g/m²: the higher the share of down, the lighter the filling can remain while retaining its loft power and insulating properties.

It is this association between filling weight and filling composition that helps understand the differences between our three duvets.

Finding a duvet with denser filling, inspired by the hotel industry

Absolue Duvet 180 g/m²: 100% goose down

With a filling weight of only 180 g/m², the Absolue is the lightest of our three natural duvets. Its filling is exclusively composed of new Masurian goose down, without feathers.

This composition allows you to fully enjoy the qualities inherent to down: a particularly light and lofty filling, capable of trapping air without requiring a large quantity of material. In 200 × 200 cm, the duvet thus contains only 720 g of filling.

The Absolue is therefore aimed primarily at those seeking the enveloping sensation of a down duvet while keeping maximum lightness on the body. Its cotton batiste casing accompanies this choice of a particularly fine filling.

Prestige Duvet 200 g/m²: 90% down and 10% feathers

The Prestige combines 90% new Masurian goose down with 10% feathers, for a filling weight of 200 g/m².

The presence of a small proportion of feathers brings more structure to the filling, while maintaining a very high proportion of down. In 200 × 200 cm, it contains 800 g of filling, i.e., only 80 g more than the Absolue for this dimension.

It is this balance between lightness, loft, and hold that characterizes the Prestige. It corresponds in particular to the type of comfort sought in 5-star hotels and palaces, where the quality of bedding must combine a feeling of lightness with enveloping comfort.

It thus constitutes a particularly interesting option for private individuals who wish to find this feeling of hotel-style bedding at home, but also for professionals looking for a natural duvet very rich in down to equip their rooms.

Hôtel Premium Duvet 250 g/m²: 70% down and 30% feathers

With 250 g/m², the Hôtel Premium has the highest filling weight of our three natural duvets. Its filling combines 70% new Masurian goose down and 30% feathers, i.e., 1,000 g of filling for a 200 × 200 cm duvet.

The higher proportion of feathers brings it more substance and hold. It thus offers a different sensation from the Absolue and the Prestige: its filling is more present, while still retaining a majority of down.

As its name suggests, the Hôtel Premium is particularly suitable for those seeking comfort inspired by the hotel industry. It also constitutes a solution to consider for equipping a hotel, a guest house, a gîte, or a seasonal rental with a natural duvet combining down, hold, and also generosity of filling.

These three duvets illustrate above all why 180, 200, or 250 g/m² cannot be compared independently of the composition of the filling. To determine which one will suit you best, you must then take into account another essential criterion: the temperature of the bedroom.

Which duvet filling weight should you choose based on bedroom temperature?

The usual temperature of the bedroom is one of the first criteria to take into account when choosing a duvet. The same person will not need the same level of insulation in a room kept at 21 °C as in a room that drops to 17 °C during the night.

For a natural duvet, this temperature must however be viewed in relation to the composition of the filling. The filling weight benchmarks allow you to guide your choice, but the proportion of down remains decisive for appreciating the insulating qualities of a duvet.

Which filling weight for a room at 20 °C or more?

In a bedroom heated to 20 °C or more, it is generally preferable to favor a lightweight natural duvet, especially if you tend to get warm during the night. A moderate filling weight helps avoid a feeling of excessive heat, while still benefiting from the naturally insulating properties of down.

In the Maison Trinitas range, the Absolue 180 g/m² duvet is particularly interesting when lightness is the main criterion. Its 100% new Masurian goose down filling allows for limiting the quantity of material while benefiting from the loft power of down.

The Prestige 200 g/m² duvet, composed of 90% down and 10% feathers, also remains very light while offering a slightly more structured filling. The choice between the two will therefore depend less on their 20 g/m² difference than on the sensation sought under the duvet.

Which filling weight for a room between 18 and 20 °C?

A temperature between 18 and 20 °C corresponds to a temperate bedroom and a situation that is particularly common throughout the year. In this configuration, a natural duvet around 180 to 250 g/m² can be suitable, provided that you take into account its composition and your sensitivity to cold.

The three Maison Trinitas natural duvets can thus meet different expectations.

The Absolue 180 g/m² duvet, with its 100% down filling, favors lightness and loft above all else. The natural Prestige 200 g/m² duvet, composed of 90% down, offers a balance between lightness and the hold of the filling. The Hôtel Premium 250 g/m² duvet, with 70% down and 30% feathers, offers a filling that is more present and more structured.

For a temperate bedroom, the filling weight therefore does not allow you to choose between these three models on its own: the sensation sought under the duvet becomes a true criterion for selection.

Which filling weight for a room below 18 °C?

When the room temperature drops below 18 °C, the need for insulation becomes more significant. The usual benchmarks then point towards warmer duvets, but one must remain cautious with the filling weight alone: increasing the quantity of filling is not the only way to improve the insulation of a natural duvet.

A high proportion of down notably allows for trapping a lot of air for a reduced weight. A duvet rich in down can therefore offer significant insulation without becoming particularly heavy.

If your bedroom is cool or if you are particularly sensitive to cold, it is preferable not to choose between 180, 200, and 250 g/m² based on this figure alone. The composition of the filling, its loft power, and the desired level of warmth must be considered together.

In this case, the choice of a Maison Trinitas duvet will depend more on your sleeping habits and the desired sensation: the lightness and loft of the Absolue, the balance of the Prestige, or the more present filling of the Hôtel Premium.

Which duvet filling weight should you choose for winter or summer?

The choice of a duvet naturally evolves with the seasons, but the filling weight to favor depends mainly on the actual temperature of the bedroom. A room that is air-conditioned in summer or well-heated in winter may ultimately present fairly similar conditions.

With a natural duvet, the season therefore constitutes an additional benchmark: it allows you to determine whether you are looking for a light duvet for the warmest nights, a sufficiently insulating duvet for winter, or a versatile model to keep for a large part of the year.

Which filling weight for a winter duvet?

For a winter duvet, the goal is to effectively retain heat without necessarily increasing the weight felt on the body. This is precisely one of the benefits of natural down: its loft power allows it to trap air and ensure good insulation with relatively little material.

There is therefore no universal filling weight for a winter down duvet. A high filling weight can provide more material, but the proportion and quality of the down must always be taken into account to appreciate the insulating properties of the filling.

Among the Maison Trinitas natural duvets, the choice will thus depend on the sensation sought:

  1. the Absolue 180 g/m² (filled with 100% down) favors light and lofty insulation
  2. the Prestige 200 g/m² (composed of 90% down and 10% feathers) offers more hold while remaining very rich in down
  3. the Hôtel Premium 250 g/m² (with 70% down and 30% feathers) offers a more present filling.

For an especially cool bedroom or for someone who gets cold easily, the usual room temperature remains a more reliable criterion than just the "winter duvet" label.

What fill weight for a summer duvet?

In summer, the need is different: the duvet must provide comfort without retaining an excessive amount of heat. A light fill weight is therefore generally preferred.

Down is of particular interest here as well. Being very light, it allows for a duvet that remains fluffy and enveloping without the need for heavy filling. For warm bedrooms or sleepers sensitive to heat, a down-rich duvet with a low fill weight can thus be particularly suitable.

With its 180 g/m² and 100% new Masurian goose down filling, the Absolue is the lightest of the three Maison Trinitas natural duvets. However, its value is not limited to summer: depending on the room temperature and individual sensitivity, a light and very down-rich duvet can accompany the sleeper over a much longer period.

On the hottest nights, however, no duvet will suit every sleeper. It may then be better to sleep with a simple sheet rather than trying at all costs to find a very low duvet fill weight.

What fill weight for a medium-weight or 4-season duvet?

A medium-weight duvet is designed to offer a compromise between the needs of cool nights and those of milder periods. It is particularly suitable for bedrooms where the temperature remains relatively stable throughout the year.

Rather than looking for a specific fill weight, it is therefore relevant to choose a natural duvet whose composition corresponds to the desired feel. The 180 to 250 g/m² fill weights of Maison Trinitas duvets thus make it possible to maintain relatively light fillings, with different balances between down and feathers.

The concept of a 4-season duvet often refers to a system composed of two duvets of different fill weights that can be used separately or joined together depending on the season. It does not, therefore, correspond to a single fill weight. Maison Trinitas natural duvets do not rely on this principle: the choice is made between different fillings according to your bedroom temperature, your sensitivity to cold, and the feel you are looking for under the duvet.

What duvet fill weight should you choose for a hotel or tourist accommodation?

For a hotel, gîte, or bed and breakfast, choosing a duvet solely according to the preferences of one sleeper is not possible: it must suit guests with different thermal sensitivities. The comfort sought must also remain consistent from one room to another and adapt to the establishment's conditions of use.

The fill weight is therefore a selection criterion, but it must be combined with the composition of the filling, the temperature of the rooms, and the level of comfort that the establishment wishes to offer its guests.

Why choose a versatile duvet for a hotel room?

In a private bedroom, everyone can choose their duvet according to their habits: light for a person who gets hot easily, more enveloping for a sleeper who gets cold. In a hotel establishment, the occupants change every night, and their preferences with them.

The challenge is therefore to seek a balance likely to suit as many people as possible. In a room where the temperature is controlled, a natural, down-rich duvet makes it possible to combine insulating power, loft, and lightness, without unnecessarily increasing the grams of filling.

This versatility is also interesting for a gîte, a guest house, or a seasonal rental. Choosing a duvet adapted to the usual conditions of the room allows for consistent bedding throughout the opening period, even if it means providing a supplementary solution for the hottest or coldest periods.

Should you choose the same fill weight for all rooms?

Not necessarily. Equipping all rooms with the same reference naturally facilitates the management of an establishment, but their thermal conditions may be different.

A room in the attic, south-facing, or air-conditioned does not have the same needs as a room located on the ground floor or one that is naturally cooler. The region, altitude, quality of insulation, heating and air conditioning, as well as the establishment's opening season can also vary the needs.

Before standardizing your equipment, it is therefore useful to observe the temperature actually recorded in the different rooms at night. When this remains homogeneous, the same versatile duvet can simplify equipment and linen management. When significant differences exist, adapting the choice to certain rooms can provide more comfort to guests.

Which Maison Trinitas duvet should you choose to equip a hotel, gîte, or seasonal rental?

Maison Trinitas has been equipping hotel professionals since 2005. This experience is reflected in our three natural duvets, which allow us to meet different positioning needs and sleep sensations.

The 250 g/m² Hôtel Premium is the choice most directly inspired by hotel equipment. Its filling, composed of 70% new Masurian goose down and 30% feathers, offers more substance and structure. It can, in particular, meet the needs of a hotel, gîte, guest house, or seasonal rental looking for a generous and structured natural duvet.

The 200 g/m² Prestige increases the proportion of down, with 90% down and 10% feathers. It corresponds to the type of comfort sought in 5-star hotels and palaces: a filling very rich in down, light and fluffy, to which the presence of feathers adds structure. It is particularly suitable for establishments that wish to make the quality of the bedding a distinctive element of the experience offered to their guests.

The 180 g/m² Absolue takes this pursuit of lightness even further with a filling composed of 100% new Masurian goose down. It is aimed more at high-end residential comfort, but can also be suitable for accommodations whose positioning is based on an especially light and enveloping sleep experience.

There is, therefore, no single "hotel duvet." The choice between Hôtel Premium, Prestige, and Absolue depends on the establishment's positioning, the room temperature, the level of comfort sought, and the sleep sensation you wish to offer your guests.
